In Feburary 1954, St. Leo Hospital in Greensboro closed its doors. The Hospital, which was opened in 1906, was staffed by the Sisters of Charity and also functioned as a School for Nursing. It was placed under the patronage of Pope St. Leo the Great in deference to Abbot-Bishop Leo Haid, OSB who was, at the time, Apostolic Vicar of North Carolina. The building that housed the hospital was later renovated and became Notre Dame High School.

On 9 February 2002 the first Ordinary of the Diocese of Charlotte, Bishop Michael Begley, passed from this life. He was the Shepherd of the Diocese of Charlotte from 1972 until his retirement in 1984. He fell asleep in the Lord at Maryfield Retirement Community in High Point, NC. May his memory be eternal!

hayesville_mission_facade_nd_websmallHayesville Catholics attended Mass in this former motel/restaurantOn February 6, 1955 the the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered for the first time in Hayesville. The Mass was celebrated in an office above the Hayesville Drug Store by Glenmary priest Fr. Joseph Dean. In 1959 a motel/restaurant was purchased for the Catholic Mission in Hayesville. It was converted to house a chapel, convent for the Glenmary Sisters, and offices for their home nursing service. Immaculate Heart of Mary Church which was constructed in 1984 and dedicated in 1985 is today the spiritual home of Hayesville Catholics. It is a mission of St. William in Murphy.

On January 30th, 1956, Bishop Vincent Waters of the Diocese of Raleigh dedicated the newly contructed church of St. Stephen in Elkin. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass had been offered in Elkin since the opening of St. John Baptist de la Salle in North Wilkesboro in 1952. St. Stephen's remains a mission of St. John Baptist de la Salle.

On 23 January 1910, Joseph Federal was baptized at St. Benedict Church in Greensboro by Fr. Vincent Taylor, OSB of Belmont Abbey. Little did they know at the time, but both men were destined for greater honors. Fr. Taylor was elected second Abbot of Belmont Abbey in 1924 and Joseph Federal would eventually become Bishop Joseph Federal in 1951. This Greensboro native was Ordinary of the Salt Lake City Diocese from 1960-1980.
