| Carmelite Convent in Asheville |
On March 15, 1956 six Carmelite Nuns and one postulant arrived in Asheville to establish the first cloistered community in North Carolina. The Carmel (convent), located on the old Ambler Heights property, was named after St. Joseph and the Holy Child. It closed in 1978 and the mansion that housed the convent was destroyed by arson in October 1984. |
